“Plan 9 From Outer Space”--the 1959, ultra-low-budget flick deemed by many as the worst film ever made--has been developed into a stage musical, about to become a weekend attraction in . . . Kansas!
Utilizing the movie’s story line about grave-robbing aliens out to destroy Earth, the stage version opens Saturday, running Friday and Saturday nights at 11 at the 400-seat Fine Arts Theater in suburban Mission, Kan. Plans call for a three-month run.
The show boasts tunes like “Grave Robbers From Outer Space” and “Plan Makin’ Man.” Not to mention surfing zombies warbling “Hang Ten” and a group called the Female Walking Dead.
Originally produced in 1983 at the University of Utah, the show traveled around, landing late last year in Kansas City--the home of Wade Williams, who happens to own all rights to the movie. The show’s writer had never gotten Williams’ permission to adapt “Plan 9”--and was mighty surprised to find him in the audience one night!
“Basically, I said, ‘Let’s make it legal,’ ” said Williams, and the show went on.
If it’s a hit, Williams added, it may end up on the road, “and then who knows where.”
