S&L; Crisis

In your letters (Feb. 4) on the savings and loan crisis, a writer suggested that a contributing factor to the crisis was that people are seeking a maximum interest on their deposits without any regard for the stability of the S&L;, because they knew that their deposits are insured for the full amount.
Maybe a solution would be for the FSLIC to only insure 90% of the deposit. This would preserve the original intent of protecting people from losing all their savings; but at the same time the potential loss of 10% would provide enough incentive for people to consider the stability of the S&L.;
