The nation’s economy will continue to expand in 1989 but growth will slow slightly, according to a report by a panel of economists sponsored by the Conference Board. The group projected that real gross national product will rise about 2.5% this year, down from about 2.7% in 1988. The group also projected that inflation would rise to 5% from 4.2%, the prime rate would hold steady at about 10.5% and unemployment would increase slightly to 5.5%.
