China’s leading dissident, Fang Lizhi, took his message to the country’s Establishment, telling a party attended by hundreds of actors, scientists and businessmen that they should work for human rights. “Some people think China doesn’t need democracy, but I think human rights is basic,” Fang said. The party at a Beijing hotel was organized by the Chinese Cultural Academy and the Academy of Sciences Entrepreneurial Assn., both of which are state-run.
