Protestant and Roman Catholic politicians in Northern Ireland confirmed that party members met secretly in West Germany in mid-October but said they found no way to end the province’s sectarian violence. “Sadly, there’s no agreement, there’s no new dawn, there’s no new era. We are not on the eve of a breakthrough,” said Peter Robinson, deputy leader of the hard-line Protestant Democratic Unionist Party. Other Protestant and Catholic leaders made similar comments.
