Two men were burned when a fire started in the basement of a house Friday afternoon, authorities said.
Identities of the victims were not available Friday night. The fire was reported at 5:15 p.m. at 711 W. Richland St. and was contained half an hour later, Fire Department spokeswoman Sharon Frank said.
The more badly injured victim had second- and third-degree burns over 50% of his body, Frank said. The other victim had second- and third-degree burns over 20% of his body. Both were taken to UCI Medical Center’s burn unit.
Some older homes in the city have water heaters and floor furnaces in abbreviated basements, and “that’s an area of question,” Frank said.
No estimate of damage was available late Friday.
