O.J. Simpson has been charged with beating his wife in a New Year’s Day argument during which he hit and kicked her and yelled, “I’ll kill you,” police said.
Simpson, 41, a former NFL star and the 1968 Heisman Trophy winner at USC, allegedly struck his wife, Nicole, 29, and pulled her hair at 3:30 a.m. Jan. 1 at the couple’s Brentwood home, according to police records.
Simpson downplayed the incident Wednesday.
“My wife and I had a fight, that’s it,” he said. “We put it behind us.”
Charges were filed Monday by the city attorney’s office. Simpson will answer the charges on Feb. 17 in West Los Angeles Municipal Court.
Simpson is charged with one misdemeanor count of spousal battery, said Mike Qualls, a spokesman for the city attorney’s office. If convicted, Simpson faces a maximum of 1 year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
