ANKARA, Turkey — Three West Germans and a Turk have been arrested on charges of trying to smuggle Byzantine and early Ottoman antiques out of Turkey, the Anatolian News Agency said Thursday.
It did not identify them but said they were detained when they attempted to cross the Bulgarian border Wednesday in a bus destined for West Germany.
It said their suitcases contained candlesticks, seals, statuettes, necklaces and similar artifacts from the 13th Century and 3,500 antique gold, silver and bronze coins.
