TOKYO — Martina Navratilova won easily, and Chris Evert struggled through full sets as the two Americans advanced today to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament.
The top-seeded Navratilova blasted strong serves in the second set and trounced Japan’s up-and-coming Nana Miyagi 6-4, 6-1 in 47 minutes in a second-round match.
The second-seeded Evert, No. 3 in the world, needed an hour and 40 minutes to post a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over American qualifier Andrea Leand.
In other second-round matches, American Zina Garrison made an erratic start but recovered and beat compatriot Wendy White 6-3, 6-2.
