‘Cleaning Up Sports System’

I wholeheartedly agree with former NFL player Mark Murphy (“Tougher Eligibility Rules Will Help Educate Athletes,” Opinion, Jan. 22) in his column regarding college athletics.
Proposition 42 is long overdue, Georgetown Basketball Coach John Thompson notwithstanding. Why should I, as a taxpayer, pay taxes to the state of California which are used by the California university systems (UC and Cal State) to pay for the dorm food that the illiterate athlete eats, the books that he/she is supposed to read during school, and the classes that the “student-athlete” allegedly attends?
Contributors to state institutions as well as private institutions should demand better accountability for their bucks.
