San Francisco Zoo Director Saul Kitchener has filed a claim for disability, three weeks after announcing his retirement amid public criticism of zoo management. If the claim is approved, Kitchener, 50, would receive monthly benefits more than double ordinary retirement. Two outside reviews of the zoo were conducted last year after allegations of elephant abuse were raised. The zoo also was criticized for transferring an orangutan to the Philadelphia Zoo and for the deaths of monkeys and musk oxen.
