Ireland Takes Action to Control Dangerous Dogs

DUBLIN, Ireland — Veterinarians began electronically tagging guard dogs Friday after a vicious attack on two Dublin schoolboys by a pack of marauding German shepherds.
Veterinary surgeons implanted electronic microchips under the skins of guard dogs to keep track of them, and officials set up a national register for an estimated 2,000 of the animals. The owners of unlicensed dogs face $750 fines.
The 9-year-old boys were attacked outside their school last year by a pack of dogs and severely mauled.
Wardens shot and killed two of the dogs and another was beaten to death by enraged townspeople.
