BEIRUT, Lebanon — President Amin Gemayel said he is leaving office at the end of his six-year term tonight and giving the reins of power to an interim government.
Muslim leaders said the move would partition Lebanon into Christian and Muslim areas. Earlier, Muslims and Christians clashed around the dividing Green Line. Gemayel’s determination to form a new government despite Muslim warnings threatened to rekindle the 13-year-old civil war, which has left more than 150,000 dead.
