LONDON — An explosion and fire ripped through another American-operated oil rig in the North Sea today but all but one of the 67 people aboard were rescued in a massive helicopter operation, officials said.
The missing man was understood to be the radio operator on the ARCO rig, the Ocean Odyssey. Less than three months ago, 167 men were killed off Aberdeen in the North Sea’s worst drilling disaster when a blast tore through the Occidental-operated Piper Alpha platform, unleashing a fireball that melted parts of the steel structure.
