A federal jury in Boston found seven former and current police officers guilty of 55 counts charging them with accepting more than $18,000 in bribes from restaurants and bars to overlook violations and perform special services. The jury had deliberated for six days. The seven officers showed little or no emotion as the verdicts were read. Each officer was convicted of two counts under the federal racketeering statute, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Some defendants also were found guilty of federal extortion charges, substantive mail fraud and mail fraud conspiracy.
