Local News in Brief : Countywide : Supervisors Approve Fire Captain Settlement
- Share via
The Board of Supervisors, in a unanimous vote Tuesday, approved a $671,039 settlement with 131 county Fire Department captains who had filed a lawsuit to collect overtime pay they said the county was illegally withholding from them.
The settlement also requires the county to begin paying the captains overtime, retroactive to May.
The settlement stems from a 1987 federal lawsuit in which the county was accused of violating labor laws. The captains contended they should have been paid overtime under a congressional act that established work rules for public employees.
The county had concluded that the captains were managerial employees and thus not entitled to overtime under the rules.
