Unions vowed to shut down Buenos Aires and Argentina’s other main cities today to protest the government’s use of force to break up an anti-government rally. The strike will affect schools, banks, public transportation and government offices. The unions said the walkout will be in response to a police break-up of a rally Friday that was part of a national strike to protest President Raul Alfonsin’s economic reforms, aimed at curbing inflation that has soared to 440% in the past year along with a 14% unemployment rate. Reported injuries in the action to disperse a crowd of 20,000 totaled 113, including 37 police officers.
