Opposition activists united behind Solidarity leader Lech Walesa as he forged strategy for talks with Poland’s Communist authorities in which he will seek a return to legality for the banned union. About 60 intellectuals and dozens of union activists issued a declaration in the Baltic port of Gdansk that said the Communist authorities must restore Solidarity’s legal status--the union was outlawed in 1982--or face the continued mistrust of society. Solidarity sources said Walesa will meet with Interior Minister Czeslaw Kiszczak on either Wednesday or Thursday to prepare for talks on the country’s future later this month between the government, the opposition and independent public figures.
