An estimated 150,000 Iraqis paraded past the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to denounce a U.S. Senate call for sanctions because of Iraq’s reported use of poison gas against Kurdish rebels. It was the biggest anti-U.S. demonstration ever in Iraq and the first in 20 years. The Senate voted Friday to demand economic sanctions against Iraq after Secretary of State George P. Shultz declared that the Baghdad regime had used chemical weapons against its northern Kurdish population. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said the Senate action was an attempt to divert media attention from the nine-month-old Palestinian uprising in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
