John Weich caught two touchdown passes in the second half as Santa Clara defeated Bell-Jeff, 27-0, in a nonleague game Saturday night at Oxnard High.
Weich’s one-yard touchdown catch gave the Saints a 14-0 lead and his 45-yard catch gave them a 21-0 advantage.
Santa Clara’s Jim Caballeros recovered a fumble with 4:14 remaining in the second quarter to set up running back Kwinn Knight’s fourth-down, one-yard plunge that gave the Saints a 7-0 lead at halftime.
Knight rushed for 139 yards in 25 carries and caught 3 passes for 23 yards.
A swarming Saints defense forced four Bell-Jeff turnovers, including a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown by Matt Young on the last play of the game.
Santa Clara, which had lost openers to the Guards each of the past two years, had 320 yards in total offense. Bell-Jeff was limited to 151 total yards.
