LOCAL HEROES: L.A. groove-masters Fishbone have returned with “Truth and Soul,” a kickin’ new album featuring a remake of Curtis Mayfield’s “Freddie’s Dead,” plus heavy-weight originals like “Subliminal Fascism,” “Ghetto Soundwave” and “Slow Bus Movin’ (Howard Beach Party).” The band will be at the Anson Ford Theatre Sept. 30. . . . Speaking of serious dancing, the Untouchables are also due back shortly with a new record, titled “Double O-Soul.” . . . With X on hiatus, John Doe has signed a deal with Geffen Records, which hopes to have his solo debut out by next summer. . . . Maria McKee is also at work on a solo project--due early next year--with top producer Mitch Froom at the helm. . . . Better still, Rickie Lee Jones is at work (also at Geffen) on a new album, due in spring 1989, with Steely Dan’s Walter Becker handling the studio chores. . . . Even stranger--oddball popsters Barnes & Barnes are producing a spoken-word album with actor/eccentric Crispin Glover. . . . Coming sooner: Local pop-tarts the Pandoras, who return (after a short, unhappy life at Elektra Records) with a new mini-LP on Restless Records, titled “Charge You Up.” . . . Also don’t miss dreamy-popsters Hugo Largo’s newly remixed album, “Drum,” which comes equipped with a pair of new songs, “Scream Tall” and “Harpers,” the latter co-written by REM’s Michael Stipe. The disc is just out on Opal Records, Brian Eno’s new custom label, distributed through Warner Bros.
