Area Roundup : UCI Women’s Volleyball Event Begins Tonight

The second annual Anteater Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine’s women’s volleyball team, will begin tonight at the Bren Center on the UC Irvine campus.
Loyola Marymount will play Utah State (2-0) at 5 p.m. with Irvine playing Baylor Universtiy (1-4) at 7 p.m. The Anteaters are defending champions, having defeated the University of San Diego and the University of Toledo last year.
Irvine is 3-1 this season after defeating UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside and UC San Diego last week in the All-California Tournament in San Diego.
The tournament ends Saturday.
Steve Niednagel of Dana Hills ran to victory in a non-scoring tri-meet between Dana Hills, Tustin and Canyon high schools at Dana Hills Wednesday.
Niednagel, a senior, finished the flat three-mile course in 15 minutes 16 seconds. He was followed by teammates Mike Tansley (15:22), Andrew Tansley (15:46) and sophomore Daniel Niednagel (16:11).
Scott Larsen of Tustin finished fifth in 16:20 and Steve Ernest of Canyon was sixth in 16:26.
Dana Hills’ Regina Schudlich won the girls’ race in 19:04. Schudlich was followed by Canyon’s Heidi Forsyth (19:20) and Cathy Lee (19:52) and Allison Horak of Dana Hills (20:13).
The Newport Outrigger Canoe Club will hold a luau tonight at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center with proceeds going to the club.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
