High School Volleyball : Newbury Park Starts Fast in 4-A Division Debut

The Newbury Park girls’ volleyball team made the transition from the Southern Section 2-A Division to the 4-A as quickly as a Porsche changing lanes on the San Diego Freeway.
Newbury Park beat Marymount, the fourth-ranked team in the 4-A, 15-3, 15-3, 15-12, in the season-opening match for both teams Thursday at Marymount.
Marla Cormier had 20 service points and Camille Mitchell added 15 kills in the Panthers’ nonleague win.
“We’re in the 4-A now and, obviously, we can compete with these teams,” Coach Joe Wortmann said.
Thousand Oaks d. La Reina, 16-14, 15-8, 15-8--Setter Amy Chellevold had 10 kills and 4 service aces to lead the Lancers in a nonleague match at La Reina.
Alemany d. La Canada, 15-7, 15-7, 15-6--Staci Baldwin had six kills and four blocks to lead host Alemany in the nonleague opener for both schools.
Calabasas d. Westlake, 15-10, 15-12, 15-12--Keri Ellman had 15 kills to lead the Coyotes to a nonleague victory at Westlake.
