Area Roundup : Wheelchair Tennis Group to Hold Junior Event in Irvine

The National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis will hold its third annual junior national tournament Saturday and Sunday at Heritage Park in Irvine.
More than 60 players are expected to compete in age divisions from 7 to 18. Jason Van Beek of Chino, the defending open champion, is expected to compete.
Tony Jacobsen of Northridge, the boys’ 14-18 division winner, Anthony Lara of Chino Hills, who won the boys’ 14-and-under division, and girls’ open champion Gina Jalbert of Arcadia also are scheduled to compete.
The seven top finishers are eligible for the junior division of the United States Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship at the Racquet Club of Irvine Oct. 7-16.
Admission is free.
Herediano plays Olimpia at 4 p.m. Sunday at Santa Ana Stadium in a semifinal of the Camel World Class Soccer Series. The winner advances to the final Sept. 11 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Herediano, a team from Costa Rica, defeated Atlante, 3-1, and Olimpia, a team from Honduras, defeated Arlas, 2-0, to reach the semifinal round.
More than 80 outrigger canoe teams are expected to compete Saturday and Sunday in the annual Catalina championships.
About 30 women’s teams leave Newport Dunes at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and paddle the 26 miles to the Avalon Harbor. About 50 men’s teams will paddle from Avalon to Newport Dunes on Sunday.
A baseball clinic for boys and girls featuring Angels Jack Howell, Darrell Miller, Jim Eppard and Greg Minton will be held Wednesday at the Anaheim Celebrity Theatre from noon to 1 p.m. Admission is free. For information, call (213) 931-4151.
