WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday ordered General Motors to recall more than half a million 1983 Oldsmobiles and Buicks to repair defects in their emission systems.
The agency said General Motors must notify owners of 613,582 vehicles to bring their cars in for repairs of defective thermal vacuum switches, a component of emission-control equipment. EPA officials said the defect causes the vehicles to exceed federal limits on carbon monoxide emissions.
