Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp’s opinion that a police officer’s privacy rights (in misconduct cases) outweigh any public right to know is clearly wrong-headed. Even if it is based upon state law, it should be overruled by either the courts or the Legislature (Metro, Aug. 18).
All rhetoric to one side, policemen are public servants; hence they should be accountable to us. The only ones who can “reasonably” be expected to object to such a requirement are those with something to hide.
