Cal Thomas on ‘Christ’ Film

As a Catholic, I am embarrassed by the recent statements of Mother Angelica, head of the Eternal Word Television Network, concerning the film “The Last Temptation of Christ” (Metro, Aug. 10). Where does she get the authority to pass judgment on any person who views the film? To claim that a person would be making a choice “between heaven and hell” by watching a single movie is more blasphemous than the contents of the film which she is condemning.
What is even more disturbing is that Auxiliary Bishop John Ward of the Los Angeles Archdiocese actually endorsed her remarks. It is quite a shame that the nation’s largest Roman Catholic Archdiocese is using the statements of a narrow-minded nun with no theological credibility to address what has become a notable moral controversy.
