First-round matches of the $100,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego began Monday at the Sports Arena with third-seeded Elly Hakami of Tiburon defeating former San Diego State player Monique Javer of Hillsborough, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Eighth-seeded Jo Durie of Great Britain came back from a 2-4 second-set deficit to defeat Camille Benjamin of Bakersfield, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In other matches, Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado defeated Masako Yanagi of Japan, 6-3, 6-3; Christine Singer of West Germany defeated Hu Na of San Diego, 6-1, 6-0; Cammy MacGregor of Palm Springs defeated Michelle Jaggard of Australia, 6-3, 6-3; Deborah Graham of Fountain Valley defeated Andrea Holikova of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0); and Eva Krapl of Switzerland defeated Marianne Werdel of Bakersfield, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
BOWLING
Wendy Macpherson of San Diego is tied for fourth at the end of the first round of the $35,000 Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour Fair Lanes Denver Classic, in Englewood, Colo.
The leader, Leila Wagner of Annapolis, Md., holds a one-pin lead over Cindy Coburn of Buffalo, N.Y. She finished with a six-game total of 1,380 pins. Coburn had 1,379 pins.
