SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY : Dolphin Systems Breaches Market for Macintosh PC Booster Products

Compiled by David Olmos, Times staff writer

Dolphin Systems of Santa Ana has jumped into the market for products that boost the performance of Apple Computer’s popular Macintosh personal computer.

The company has introduced a 3.5-inch, hard-disk drive for the Apple Macintosh II, which the company claims will triple the data storage capacity of the machine. Hard disks can store more data in personal computers than floppy disks. Unlike flexible floppies, however, hard disks cannot be as easily removed from the machine.

Dolphin Systems is an 18-employee company founded in February to market data storage products for IBM’s Personal System/2 computers and portable computers made by several manufacturers. The company said its Dolphin AM80-IIi disk drive is its first of several storage products it plans to offer for Apple’s Macintosh.

“What we have found is that the Macintosh is emerging as one of the big powers in the microcomputer industry,” said Saleem Jawad, Dolphin Systems president. “We feel there is a big niche for our type of production in the industry. It used to be only engineers were interested in Apple products, and now more and more corporations are becoming interested.”
