WIMBLEDON, England — World Championship Tennis, the organization that ushered in the era of big-money professional tennis, announced Wednesday that its contract with the men’s Grand Prix circuit won’t be renewed in 1990.
In a news release issued at the Wimbledon tennis championships, WCT chief executive officer Owen Williams said the Men’s International Pro Tennis Council “has now willfully set about attempting to tighten the noose on an already closely controlled sport.”
William Babcock, assistant administrator of the men’s tennis council, declined comment.
WCT currently runs five events on the Grand Prix circuit.
