A light plane crashed Wednesday evening in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 near Japatul Road near Descanso, authorities said.
Details of the crash remained sketchy late Wednesday, but Tom Aina, Federal Aviation Administration duty officer in Los Angeles, said the one person believed aboard the Cessna 172 was killed. The victim’s identity was not immediately available.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, which went to the crash site, could provide no further details.
The plane crashed and burned about 7:30 p.m. after hitting power lines, according to several preliminary accounts. It was unclear whether the pilot was attempting to land on the highway.
The crash resulted in several small brush fires and a temporary power outage.
A representative of the county coroner’s office was called to the scene.
The California Highway Patrol temporarily closed the eastbound lanes after the crash. A dispatcher said there was no indication the aircraft hit any vehicles.
