BARCELONA, Spain — Four Filipino sailors died when they fell into a ship’s cargo hold filled with soybeans, government and Red Cross officials said Tuesday.
The Greek captain of the Sea Bony, Haliabalia Zafiros, was treated for poisoning after breathing toxic fumes from the hold, filled with 170,000 pounds of fermenting Brazilian soybeans, Red Cross spokesman Miguel Ramos said.
Ramos said one of the sailors died from injuries suffered in the fall Monday, while at least one of the others apparently suffocated in the hold.
