Azumah Nelson of Ghana stopped challenger Lupe Suarez with a flurry of punches early in the ninth round to retain his World Boxing Council super-featherweight championship at Atlantic City, N.J.
Nelson (28-1 with 20 knockouts) caught Suarez (25-2) with a right hand and followed with a quick flurry that put the challenger on the canvas. Suarez got up, but referee Tony Perez stopped the fight 27 seconds into the round.
