Javier Sotomayor upset world-record holder Patrik Sjoberg of Sweden to win the high jump with a leap of 7-9 3/4 in the Stora International track and field meet at Kvarnsveden, Sweden. Sjoberg cleared 7-6 1/2.
Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway ran a season’s best 8 minutes 45.09 seconds in the 3,000 meters, and Jan Zelezny of Czechoslovakia won the javelin with a toss of 281-4, best in the world this year.
