MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. — Former Gov. and Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice G. Mennen Williams--affectionately known as Soapy--was buried with full military honors today in the Protestant Cemetery on Mackinac Island.
Williams’ body was brought to the island by ferry from a funeral Home in St. Ignace. There were about 120 mourners aboard, including Williams’ widow, Nancy, and their three children. Williams died in a Detroit hospital Feb. 2 at 76. His body was entombed in a temporary crypt at Evergreen Cemetery in Detroit until it could be buried on Mackinac Island after winter.
