Why Slow Growth Lost, What Will Happen Now
- Share via
Two issues have emerged from the results of the recent defeat of Measure A, the Citizens’ Sensible Growth and Traffic Initiative.
First, it is evident that unlimited financial backing can overwhelm and obfuscate any legitimate grass-roots effort. Almost $2 million was spent to confuse the voters, the developers knowing full well that proponents of the initiative could never muster the resources needed to respond effectively in the final week before Election Day.
Secondly, The Times was, in my judgment, delinquent in recommending a no vote and failing to assume a leadership role in both educating and supporting the people of this county.
I am sorely disappointed in the behavior of city and county officials, developers and The Times. As Tom Rogers said on election night, “it was one election that was purchased.” What a pity.
