Times Fund Gives $100,000 in Grants to 200 Seniors

The Los Angeles Times Fund this year has awarded $100,000 in grants-in-aid to 200 graduating high school seniors throughout Southern California to enable them to pursue their education.
The $500 awards were presented to the students during ceremonies at public and parochial schools in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.
Started by The Times in 1967, the grants-in-aid program has awarded more than 6,000 grants totaling more than $2.3 million. The annual grants, for attendance at colleges, universities and trade schools, are distributed on the basis of merit and ability; grades are not necessarily the primary consideration.
“Through the grants-in-aid program, needy students are given the opportunity to pursue their personal and academic goals,” said Tom Johnson, publisher and chief executive officer of The Times and president of the Times Fund.
“They have demonstrated the desire and determination to be productive members of the community. The Times is pleased to be able to assist them in their desire to excel.”
The grants-in-aid program is supported by proceeds from various events sponsored by Times Special Events. Two upcoming events are the 43rd annual Times/Rams Charity Game on Aug. 13 and the Volvo Los Angeles professional tennis tournament at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Sept. 17-25.
