Nancy Reagan on a Wife’s Duty to Protect Her Husband

Bravo to our First Lady for the reference on her relationship with Mrs. Gorbachev as a “Mexican standoff,” as well as to Mrs. Reagan’s press secretary Elaine Crispen for her depiction of a Moscow gallery tour as a “Chinese fire drill.”
Such insensitive ethnic comments to the world press are compounded in the midst of President Reagan’s constant raising of the human rights issue.
The first family and its spokespeople, as representatives of our country with its varied racial and cultural makeup, might well refrain from using adjectives and figures of speech considered in many quarters to be ethnic slurs.
