A Silent President Has Them Clapping

WASHINGTON — President Reagan enlisted the aid of a group of high school seniors Thursday to evade questions from reporters at the end of a White House ceremony.
Wrapping up brief remarks in the Rose Garden to winners of the Presidential Scholars Program, which honors the nation’s outstanding seniors, Reagan began making his exit to applause while bracing for the inevitable shouted questions.
“Thank you all,” he told his audience. “Keep clapping. The press are yelling questions at me.”
The applause continued and Reagan made his way back to the Oval Office without responding to questions.
