A tax-evasion charge against former UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Robert A. Huttenback and his wife was dismissed, but a judge ordered their trial on embezzlement, insurance fraud and other tax-evasion counts to continue. Superior Court Judge Zel Canter ruled that there is “sufficient evidence to sustain a conviction, should one occur” on the remaining 11 counts, after defense attorneys sought dismissal of all charges. Huttenback and his wife, Freda, are charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from UC Santa Barbara between 1983 and 1986 by allegedly spending university funds to remodel their home. The charges allege that they also violated state tax laws by not reporting the expenditures as income.
