A 67-year-old El Cajon man was fatally injured Thursday when a one-ton asphalt roller fell from a truck and tumbled down a 50-foot embankment in Lakeside, the coroner’s office reported.
Eugene Howard Price died at Sharp Memorial about 90 minutes after the accident, Deputy Coroner Dan Matticks said.
The accident occurred at 12:30 p.m. when Price, a mechanic who had repaired the roller, delivered the machine to a job site in the 11500 block of Valley Vista Road, where an asphalt company was working on a driveway.
Price was sitting atop the machine as it was lowered from a truck. Matticks said there was an unexplained malfunction and the vehicle fell from truck. The roller, with Price in the driver’s seat, tumbled down the embankment.
