Two Japanese exchange students injured in a car accident in San Bernardino County on Tuesday were airlifted Thursday to UCI Medical Center here, where they were in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Masae Kajimura, 20, and Yumiko Miyazaki, 25, were airlifted separately in the afternoon from Barstow Community Hospital, where they had been taken after the accident.
Spokeswoman Lillian Sunkist said Kajimura was suffering from a head injury, and Miyazaki had a pelvic injury.
Another student, Kumi Matsumoto, 21, and Irvine resident Yumiko Ochi, were killed in the accident that occurred when their car swerved off Interstate 40 about 17 miles east of Ludlow. The women, who were enrolled in UC Irvine’s English as a Second Language exchange program, were heading for the Grand Canyon during a break in classes.
The parents of the three women were scheduled to arrive from Japan today, according to UCI spokeswoman Colleen Bentley-Adler.
“Until the families get here, no decisions about a memorial service or whether the students will be staying or going will be made. All these decisions will be made by the family,” Bentley-Adler said.
