American millionaire Winthrop P. Rockefeller may not have a similar encounter on the high seas, but he does hope for a historic trip aboard an Italian boat when it tries to break the record for crossing the Atlantic without refueling. Rockefeller will travel with a five-member crew aboard the high-tech Azimut Atlantic Challenger, the smallest vessel under power to try to capture the Hales Trophy. Competition rules require that there be a passenger on board for the 3,000-mile voyage from New York to England. No date has been set for the crossing. The trophy has been in American hands since 1952, when the liner United States completed the course in 82 hours, 40 minutes. “In today’s world, great adventures are a thing of the past. Thank goodness there are still some records to break,” Rockefeller said in a statement released by Fiat, which is supplying the hydro-propulsion for the engine. Rockefeller represents the Italian yacht company Azimut in the United States.
