Tennis Roundup : Seguso Gets Angry and Then Gets Beat by Connors

The record shows that Robert Seguso lost to Jimmy Connors in the second round of the $385,000 Stella Artois tennis tournament, but Seguso thought he had another opponent.
Seguso seemed headed for a victory over Connors when a questionable call turned the match around, and the third-seeded Connors eventually scored a 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 win Wednesday at London’s Queens Club.
Leading, 8-7, in the final set, Seguso hit a backhand that would have put him up, 15-40, but the shot was called out.
An obviously upset Seguso lost the game and dropped his serve to go down, 9-8. Seguso slammed his racket down and was penalized a point by umpire Stephen Winyard for verbal abuse.
“What for?” Seguso screamed at the chair. “For saying, ‘You stink?’ What did I say?”
After the match, Seguso was fined $1,500.
“I felt like hitting him,” Seguso said. “The call was not even close.”
In another match, defending champion Boris Becker overcame Scott Davis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Kent Carlsson of Sweden needed just 48 minutes to score a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Markus Rackl of West Germany in the second round of a $99,000 clay court tournament at Bologna, Italy.
In other matches, unseeded Tomas Carbonell of Spain upset sixth-seeded Ricky Osterthun of West Germany, 6-4, 7-5, No. 3 Martin Jaite of Argentina downed Ulf Stenland of Sweden, 6-4, 6-0, and fifth-seeded Alberto Mancini beat Francesco Yunis of Argentina, 6-1, 6-1.
An all-day drizzle forced officials to call off second-round matches in a $180,000 women’s tournament at Birmingham, England.
