Businessman George Stuart Karl Jr. was indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles today on charges of making $200,000 in illegal contributions in 1984 and 1986 to various candidates, including former presidential candidate Gary Hart.
The indictment alleged Karl induced others to make political contributions supporting the candidates he favored and then reimbursed them to elude federal limits on campaign contributions. Karl started Karl Video Corp. in 1979. It was responsible for Jane Fonda’s first “Workout” video, which has sold millions of copies. If convicted, he faces 36 years in prison and fines of at least $930,000.
