Fuel Spill in Wreck Causes Freeway Tie-Up

Traffic was backed up for hours on the Santa Ana Freeway early Wednesday after a collision that caused about 40 gallons of diesel fuel to spill, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred near Sand Canyon Road in East Irvine at 7:15 a.m. when southbound traffic slowed suddenly and a truck’s breaks locked, sending it into the next lane. The truck collided with a diesel truck, and both veered into the center divider, hitting the wall, CHP Officer Aaron Williamson said. A car then hit the diesel truck, and a fuel tank was ripped open.
All the southbound lanes but one were blocked for about three hours.
