The publicity-shy author Samuel Beckett has been persuaded to direct his three most famous plays for television, it was announced Wednesday. Production of English and French versions of “Waiting for Godot,” “Endgame” and “Krapp’s Last Tape” will begin in Paris in September, with release of the first play on videotape expected next summer. The productions will mark the 82-year-old Beckett’s debut as a director, and in its final form, “Beckett Directs Beckett” will include a production documentary and a group discussion of Beckett’s direction by a panel of scholars and theatrical professionals.
