Cypress Pitcher Gonzales Signs With the Astros

Benny Gonzales, a pitcher from Cypress College, has signed with the Houston Astros, the college announced Monday.
Gonzales, a right-hander who had signed a national letter of intent with Cal State Fullerton, was 11-3 and made first-team all-state and first-team All-Orange Empire Conference. He had a 2.34 earned-run average and allowed 100 hits in 126 innings with 97 strikeouts and 45 walks.
Gonzales, drafted in the 22nd round, will report Saturday to the Astros’ rookie team in Sarasota, Fla. in the Golf Coast League.
