Assemblyman Larry Stirling and his cohorts had little time to gloat over their defeat of the Community Defenders contract when the excellent article by Daniel Weintraub and accompanying editorial (May 22) hit the stands. Unfortunately, the revelations in these pieces came too late to undo the harm to Alex Landon’s reputation or to save the community defender program.
Assemblyman Stirling counted on people believing his protestations that he was guided by the principle that the noblest motive is the public good, a highly suspect claim in view of the benefits which will accrue to the assemblyman’s friends and political supporters from his successful smear campaign. In view of The Times expose, it appears the noblest motive for the assemblyman is the public trough--and making sure only his friends have access to it.
