Last American Loses in Paris

PARIS — Third-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden today outlasted America’s last hope, ninth-seeded Andre Agassi, the only U.S. player left in the French Open semifinals, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.

Wilander, the only survivor from the top 10 seeds after a week of startling upsets, has won the French Open title twice and will be playing in the final for the fifth time in seven years. Wilander’s opponent will be 11th-seeded Henri Leconte of France, who won the second semifinal 7-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Sweden’s Jonas Svensson, the conqueror of top-seeded Ivan Lendl. He is the first Frenchman to reach the final in the French Open since Yannick Noah won the title in 1983.
